It is now live on the Apple AppStore. Click here to download.

Since we initially published our FAIRtax Calculator for the web, as a Flash applet, several years ago, we have received many inquiries from FAIRtax advocates, asking if we had something similar for mobile devices. The answer is now, “Yes”… well at least partially. At this time, it’s available only for iPhone.

Note: If there is enough interest in the iPhone version, we will update it to run on iPad, as well. In such case, we will also consider undertaking the more complex task of developing a version for Android.

In keeping with the simple, straight forward design of the FAIRtax, The FAIRtax Calculator for iPhone is as simple and straight forward as we could make it. But even so, the FAIRtax is even more simple and straight forward than this app, since the FAIRtax is all automatic. For individuals, there are no forms to fill out… ever. You pay tax at the cash register, just as taxpayers already do in 45 states. Each month, each family will receive the cost of living “prebate” (a rebate in advance), based on family size. The taxpayer does nothing except spend money, as usual. It’s all automatic!

The FAIRtax Calculator is For Demonstration Purposes Only.

The reason we created the FAIRtax Calculator for iPhone is to allow FAIRtax proponents to be able to quickly determine what any particular family would pay under the FAIRtax, based on the family’s annual retail spending, the size of their family, and the region of the United States in which they live.

As you can see in the image at the top of this page, there are six scrolling pickers – one for each of three different orders of magnitude of spending and one each, to pick the number of adults in the family, number of children in the family, and the region of the United States in which they live. Spending can be selected in $10,000 increments, ranging from $0 to $9,990,000. The reason the calculator requires a region is because geographic considerations cause the cost of living in Alaska and Hawaii to be significantly higher than for the rest of the USA and this difference will affect the total net FAIRtax amount and rate. (The politically induced cost of living differences between the lower 48 states is insignificant, compared to the geographically induced cost of living difference in Alaska and Hawaii.)

Each time a picker is released, the four numbers at the bottom of the screen are updated to reflect the changes. Those numbers are the total annual tax paid at the cash register, the total annual prebate paid back to the taxpayer, the net annual dollars paid in FAIRtax, and the net FAIRtax rate.

The FAIRtax Calculator is entirely self-contained and does not connect to the Internet. That means that it can be used at any time and any place, even when you are not in range of a cell tower or IP network.

In short, the FAIRtax Calculator calculates what a person would pay at the cash register, in a whole year, based on the input level of spending on new retail products and services (the first of the four numbers at the bottom). Then it calculates the total of monthly “prebates” that a family of the selected size and in the selected region would receive in a year (the second of the four numbers at the bottom). The prebate (second number) is then subtracted from the total tax (first number), to get the net tax paid for the year (the third number). Finally, the net tax for the year is divided by the total spending that was input at the top, to determine the FAIRtax rate (the fourth number at the bottom).

It’s just that simple and that’s because the FAIRtax is even more simple. The reason why the FAIRtax is more simple than this calculator, is because it’s entirely automatic. You spend money as usual and pay the gross tax, at that time. But every month, before you spend the money and pay taxes, you will receive the prebate from the US Treasury (the prebate is a sales tax equivalent of the standard deduction). There are no forms, so there would be no IRS. You just go on with your life and never again worry about April 15.

This calculator is just to give users the ability to determine what tax rates would be for different sizes of families, with different spending habits, after the FAIRtax becomes law.

Download The FAIRtax Calculator app from the Apple AppStore now.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fairtax-calculator/id1518756922

——————

Note: We have been asked if there is an Android version or iPad version of this app. At this time, there is no Android or iPad version of the FAIRtax Calculator. However, that does not mean there won’t be one. If the iPhone version generates enough interest and there are enough subsequent requests for an Android or iPad version, we will give serious consideration to the possibility of developing a FAIRtax Calculator for those platforms. An iPad version should be able to publish in a short time. But creating an Android version would likely take quite some time, because it is said that developing for Android is not nearly as easy as developing for iOS.
